Your guide to San Diego private school education

Educating Alice

I’m always on the lookout for great books to share with my daughter, who is now a sixth grader. Since she became an independent reader, one of our favorite activities is to read the same book and then discuss it. I’ve even taken on the role of moderating a girls’ book group for her and her friends at a lovely (and lively!) local independent bookstore, The Book Works.

A year or so ago, during one of my many Google searches for titles that we might enjoy, I came across the blog of Monica Edinger, an educator at the Dalton School in New York City and a passionate expert on children’s literature. In the About section of her blog, Educating Alice, she writes:

I’m Monica Edinger and this blog of mine is about teaching, my life’s work; literature, especially that created for children; history, especially as it is taught to and learned by children; Africa, especially Sierra Leone where I was a Peace Corps Volunteer; educational technology (say student blogging ); and other sundry topics as they come to my attention.  The books I write about come to me in various ways:  some I buy, some I borrow, and some are given to me.  None are stolen.

As for Alice and her education, Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is my favorite book.

As a parent, I find her insight into children and the books they love simply fascinating. As an educator, her expertise is top-notch and she’s a great resource for inspiration. Hurray for Monica! Please keep up the good work!
